Structure of a tooth implant

What are implants made of?

Dental implants are mostly made of the body-friendly material titanium. Titanium is characterized by an enormous strength and a very good biocompatibility. The tolerance and durability of such implants has been proven by many long-term studies.

An implant consists of the so-called implant body, which is inserted into the jawbone like an artificial root.

After the healing phase, the dentist then attaches the actual restoration to the implant via an intermediate called “abutment”. It can be a crown, a bridge or a telescopic denture. In technical terms, the prosthesis on an implant is called "superstructure".

Promising all-ceramic implants made from zirconium oxide are currently being tested as an alternative to titanium implants.
